The Bombay Cat: A Living Work of Art

Created for Perfection

Developed in the 1950s by Nikki Horner to resemble a miniature black leopard. Combines Burmese personality with American Shorthair robustness.

Patent Leather Coat

Signature short, satiny black coat with extraordinary shine. Minimal shedding and easy grooming. Must be solid black with no white hairs.

Copper Penny Eyes

Striking copper or gold eyes create dramatic contrast with black coat. Eyes should be large, round, and widely spaced. Green eyes are a disqualification.

Dog-Like Devotion

Known for following owners room to room. Highly trainable, can learn tricks and walk on leash. Forms intense bonds with their families.

Bombay Personality Profile

Social Butterflies

Thrive on human interaction. Good with children, seniors, and other pets. Not suited for long periods alone.

Heat Seekers

Love warm spots and laps. Often found under covers or in sunny windows. Enjoy being held and cuddled.

Intelligent & Playful

Quick learners who enjoy puzzle toys. Remain playful throughout life. Can be taught to play fetch.

Bombay Cat Breeding Guidelines

Essential guidelines for responsible Bombay cat breeding

Optimal Breeding Age

Male Bombay Cats (Studs)

12 months to 8 years

Female Bombay Cats (Queens)

12 months to 6 years

Bombays mature relatively quickly but wait until at least 12 months for full physical and emotional development.

Health Testing Requirements

  • HCM screening (echocardiogram) - MANDATORY annually
  • Burmese head defect genetic test - MANDATORY
  • FIV/FeLV testing - MANDATORY
  • Blood type testing - MANDATORY (prevent neonatal isoerythrolysis)
  • General health examination - MANDATORY
  • Dental examination - RECOMMENDED
  • Eye examination - RECOMMENDED
  • PKD genetic test - OPTIONAL (if Persian in ancestry)

Comprehensive health testing ensures you're producing healthy Bombay kittens with excellent temperaments.

Breeding Frequency

Queens: Maximum 2 litters per year, 3-4 litters lifetime

Minimum 6 months between litters

Quality over quantity. Allow queens proper recovery time for optimal health of mother and kittens.

Color and Coat Standards

  • ONLY solid black coat acceptable for Bombay breed standard
  • No white hairs or patches permitted in show quality
  • Coat should be short, satiny, and close-lying
  • Patent leather shine is hallmark of the breed
  • Copper or gold eyes required (green eyes disqualification)
  • Black nose leather and paw pads essential
  • Kittens may show ghost tabby markings that fade with age

The Bombay was specifically created to resemble a miniature black panther. Maintain breed integrity through careful selection.

The Vision of Nikki Horner

In the 1950s, breeder Nikki Horner set out to create a cat that looked like a miniature black panther but had the temperament of a perfect house pet. After years of selective breeding between sable Burmese and black American Shorthairs, the Bombay was born.

From the Burmese:

  • Affectionate, people-oriented personality
  • Vocal nature and intelligence
  • Compact, muscular body type
  • Satiny coat texture

From the American Shorthair:

  • Robust health and longevity
  • Solid black color genetics
  • Round copper eyes
  • Easy-going adaptability

"I wanted to create a copper-eyed mini panther." - Nikki Horner

BREEDING FOR HEALTH & TEMPERAMENT

Health Management for Bombay Cats

Generally healthy breed with proper screening and responsible breeding practices

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)

Manageable

Annual echocardiogram screening essential for breeding cats. Select partners from HCM-clear bloodlines. Early detection enables management. Both parent breeds (Burmese and American Shorthair) can carry HCM genes.

Breathing Issues (Mild)

Manageable

Some Bombays inherit slightly shortened muzzles from Burmese ancestry. Select for more open facial structure. Monitor breathing during play and avoid overheating. Less severe than Persian-type brachycephaly.

Obesity Tendency

Preventable

Bombays love food and can easily become overweight. Monitor portions carefully, provide interactive feeders, maintain regular play sessions. Obesity increases risk of diabetes and joint issues.

Craniofacial Defect (Burmese Head Defect)

Preventable

Genetic test available for Burmese head defect gene. Both parents should be tested. Never breed carriers together. This lethal defect can be completely prevented through testing.

Dental Issues

Preventable

Regular dental care essential. Annual cleanings recommended. Some lines prone to gingivitis. Good dental hygiene prevents periodontal disease and systemic health issues.

Eye Tearing

Manageable

Slightly prominent eyes may tear more. Daily gentle cleaning prevents staining and infection. Select for proper eye placement in breeding program.

Stress-Related Issues

Manageable

Bombays form strong bonds and can develop separation anxiety. Provide enrichment, stable routines, and gradual alone-time training. Consider companion pets for working families.

Generally Healthy Breed

Positive

Bombays are generally robust cats with good genetic diversity. Responsible breeding focusing on health testing and temperament maintains breed vitality. Average to above-average lifespan for purebred cats.

Excellence in Bombay Breeding

The Bombay is a relatively young breed with good genetic diversity when bred responsibly. Focus on these key areas:

  • Temperament First: Select for the affectionate, social personality that defines the breed
  • Health Testing: HCM screening and Burmese head defect testing are non-negotiable
  • Coat Quality: Maintain the signature patent leather shine and solid black color
  • Eye Color: Preserve the striking copper/gold eyes - no green permitted
  • Body Type: Medium-sized, muscular but not cobby, elegant but not delicate
  • Genetic Diversity: Occasional outcrossing to Burmese maintains vigor

Your commitment to these standards ensures the Bombay remains the healthy, loving "parlor panther" that families adore.

Special Considerations for Bombay Owners

Sun Protection

Black coat absorbs heat quickly. Provide shade and fresh water. Monitor for overheating in summer.

Social Needs

Don't do well alone for long periods. Consider pairs or provide interactive toys when away.

Vocal Nature

Inherited from Burmese side. They "talk" to their owners. Not excessive but communicative.

Lap Cat Alert

Extreme lap cats and heat seekers. Prepare for a permanent lap warmer and bed companion.
