The Persian kittens above are listed by their owners and breeders. A Persian is a sweet, quiet companion, but it is also a daily-grooming, flat-faced breed with one health test that matters more than any other. This guide covers a fair price, how to vet the seller, how to avoid the scams, and what daily life with a Persian really asks of you.

The quick version. Every number here is explained and sourced in the sections below.

Is a Persian the right cat for you?

Short answer

A Persian is calm, affectionate, and happy indoors, but it is a commitment. The long coat needs daily grooming, the flat face needs daily eye care, and the breed carries real health risks. If you want a low-maintenance cat, a Persian is not it. If you will do the grooming, few cats are more rewarding.

  • Temperament: sweet, quiet, people-oriented, playful but placid, and a good fit for calm indoor homes.[6]
  • The two daily jobs are grooming the coat and wiping the eyes. Skip either and you get painful mats or eye staining and irritation.[1][5] Decide you can do this before you buy.

What a Persian kitten costs

Short answer

A pet-quality Persian kitten from a registered breeder usually runs about $1,200 to $3,000, with show or breeding lines higher.[10] A fair price should include registration papers, first vaccinations, a vet check, a written health guarantee, and proof the parents were DNA-tested for kidney disease.[2][10]

Typical Persian kitten price

  • Pet-quality kittenFrom a registered breeder, placed on spay or neuter terms$1,200 to $3,000
  • Show or breeding qualityComes with breeding rights the breeder chose to grantHigher

Prices vary widely by region and lineage, so treat this as a range. A suspiciously low price is a warning sign, not a bargain.[10]

A fair price should include

  • Registration papers
  • First vaccinations and a vet health check
  • A written health guarantee
  • Proof both parents are DNA-tested for PKD[2]

Pet and show quality are both healthy, well-bred cats.[8] What you pay for is health-tested parents and a properly raised kitten, not just the look. A cheaper kitten from untested parents often costs far more in vet bills later.

Ask one question first: are both parents PKD-tested?

Short answer

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD, cysts that slowly destroy the kidneys) is the Persian’s biggest inherited risk. It is dominant, so an affected parent passes it to about half its kittens.[2] Ask for proof both parents are DNA-negative for PKD. A DNA-clear result is far stronger than a note that "the kitten was vet-checked".[2]

  • A young kitten that looks clear on an ultrasound can still develop PKD, so the DNA test on the parents is what protects you.[2]
  • Also ask whether the parents were heart-screened for HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a thickening of the heart muscle) with an echocardiogram. They should also be DNA-tested for PRA (progressive retinal atrophy, an inherited eye disease).[3][4] A serious breeder will show you the paperwork without being pushed.

How to vet the breeder, and spot a scam

Short answer

A good Persian breeder specializes in the breed and shows you health-test paperwork. They let you meet the kitten with its mother in person or on a live video, and use a written contract. Scam sellers push you to pay fast, refuse a live viewing, and want a gift card, wire transfer, payment app, or crypto.[9]

Signs of a good breeder

  • Focuses on one or two breeds
  • Shows health-test paperwork for both parents
  • Lets you meet the kitten with its mother, in person or on a live video
  • Uses a written contract with a spay or neuter clause
  • Runs a waitlist and is in no rush to close

Scam and red flags

  • A purebred priced suspiciously low
  • Pressure to pay before it is "gone"
  • Refuses a live viewing or video call
  • Wants a gift card, wire transfer, payment app, or crypto
  • Later asks for extra "shipping" or "insurance" money

Per the FTC, do a reverse image search on the listing photos, insist on a live video, and pay by credit card so you have recourse.[9]

The daily commitment: coat and eyes

Short answer

Two jobs, every day. The Persian’s long double coat mats fast, so it needs 15 to 20 minutes of brushing daily, and a neglected mat pinches the skin and becomes a medical problem.[1] The flat face means tears overflow onto the fur, so the eye area needs a daily wipe to prevent staining and infection.[5]

Persian care schedule

  • Brush the long coatA neglected mat pinches the skin and turns into a medical problemDaily, 15 to 20 min
  • Wipe the eye areaThe flat face makes tears overflow onto the fur; this stops staining and irritationDaily
  • Check for matsThe armpits, behind the ears, and the back legs mat firstDaily
  • Professional groomOptional, but many owners book one to help manage the coatEvery few weeks

The flatter the face, the more eye and breathing care a Persian needs, so a moderate "doll-face" Persian is often the healthier, easier pet.[7]

Persian Kitten Buyer FAQ

01

How much does a Persian kitten cost?

A pet-quality Persian kitten from a registered breeder usually runs about $1,200 to $3,000, with show and breeding lines higher. Prices vary widely by region and lineage, so treat this as a range. A suspiciously low price is a warning sign, not a bargain.

02

What should a fair Persian price include?

Registration papers, first vaccinations, a vet health check, a written health guarantee, and proof the parents were DNA-tested for polycystic kidney disease. You are paying for health-tested parents and a well-raised kitten, not just the look.

03

How do I know a Persian kitten is healthy?

Ask for proof both parents are DNA-negative for polycystic kidney disease (PKD), and ask whether they were heart-screened and eye-tested. A DNA-clear result on the parents protects you far more than a single 'vet-checked' note on the kitten.

04

What is PKD and why does it matter when buying?

In polycystic kidney disease, cysts slowly destroy the kidneys. It is dominant, so an affected parent passes it to about half its kittens. That is why buying from PKD-negative parents is the single most important health check for a Persian.

05

How do I spot a Persian kitten scam?

Watch for a purebred priced suspiciously low, pressure to pay fast, and a refusal to let you see the kitten in person or on a live video. Never pay by gift card, wire transfer, payment app, or crypto. Do a reverse image search on the photos and pay by credit card.

06

How do I vet a Persian breeder?

A good breeder focuses on one or two breeds and shows health-test paperwork for both parents. They also let you meet the kitten with its mother and use a written contract with a spay or neuter clause. Being 'always available' with no health tests is a red flag.

07

Should I buy a doll-face or a peke-face Persian?

The moderate doll-face type is usually the healthier, easier pet. The extreme flat peke-face blocks tear drainage and makes breathing and eating harder. A more moderate muzzle still looks like a Persian while sparing the cat chronic eye and breathing trouble.

08

How much grooming does a Persian need?

About 15 to 20 minutes of brushing every day, plus a daily eye wipe. The long coat mats fast, and a neglected mat pinches the skin and turns into a painful, medical problem. Many owners also book a professional groom every few weeks.

09

Do Persians have eye problems?

Yes, because the flat face distorts the tear ducts, so tears overflow onto the fur instead of draining. That causes staining and, if ignored, skin and eye irritation. A daily wipe of the eye area keeps it under control.

10

What is the difference between pet and show quality?

Both are healthy, well-bred cats. Pet-quality kittens are placed on spay or neuter terms and cost less; show or breeding quality costs more and comes with breeding rights the breeder chose to grant. For a companion, pet quality is exactly right.

11

How long do Persians live?

About 13.5 years on the largest veterinary dataset, with kidney disease the leading cause of death. Buying from PKD-tested parents and keeping up with grooming and vet care gives a Persian its best shot at a long life.

Very grateful to Petmeetly! I found Cola, a 10-year-old black cat who is experienced with dogs and the outdoors, and is so affectionate and sweet. He’s settling in slowly, as cats do, and gaining more confidence every day. His previous owner so generously gave me his scratchers, food bowl, bed, remaining food, litter box, brush, water fountain, and even his adorable bow-tie collar. He was very sad to part with him, but may visit to say one last goodbye ☺️ I hadn’t wanted to go through shelters, and Petmeetly felt so much more personal. I was able to learn about Cola’s health, past life, and his likes and needs. Keep doing amazing work — many blessings to you! 🙌
