Pair broken to solid. That cross averages half broken and half solid kits and produces no charlies. Breeding broken to broken throws about one kit in four with two copies of the spotting gene, called a charlie: mostly white, lightly marked, and carrying a documented risk of megacolon, a serious lifelong gut condition. A DNA test exists.
The white-and-color coat that show people call broken comes from one gene, the English spotting gene, written En. A broken rabbit carries one copy. A solid rabbit carries none. A charlie carries two, and two copies is the combination that causes trouble.[4]

A charlie is easy to describe and easy to miss. It is mostly white, with color on the nose and ears and usually 10 percent or less on the body. Many carry the marking breeders call the Charlie Chaplin mustache.[4][8] The catch is that white coats can hide it. Ruby-eyed white, blue-eyed white and pointed white rabbits can carry two copies with no visible spotting. A plain white rabbit in a pedigree can be a charlie nobody logged.[6]
The health evidence is peer-reviewed and specific. A 2014 study in PLOS ONE examined Checkered Giants, which carry the same En gene that brokens carry. Rabbits with two copies were subvital, meaning they survive less well, because of a dilated cecum and colon. All 15 of the two-copy rabbits inspected showed clear signs of megacolon, a gut that loses its ability to move food through. Ten of the 15 had hard, dry droppings, and none of the single-copy or no-copy rabbits did.[5]
The mechanism is the same gene doing a second job. En sits on KIT, a gene that also builds the pacemaker cells in the gut wall that keep food moving. In two-copy rabbits, KIT activity in the colon measured about 5 percent of normal.[5] Owners see big misshapen soft droppings, repeat bouts of gut slowdown, and trouble holding weight. It arrives in flare-ups rather than steadily.[6] The scope matters when you repeat this. The finding is documented in English-spotted breeds, which carry the same gene, and not in Mini Lops specifically.
There is a test, and there is a simpler rule. A commercial PCR test identifies two-copy rabbits for about $77. The lab is clear about the limit: the test reports the genotype, not whether or when gut trouble will show up.[7] The working rule needs no lab at all. One lop rabbitry puts it plainly: “try to avoid breeding two Broken patterned rabbits”.[8]
Judges reward the same decision. A broken Mini Lop has to carry a butterfly marking across the muzzle and a solid circle of color around each eye. Less than 10 percent color, or missing head markings, is a disqualification.[9] So the charlie you chose not to breed is also a rabbit you could never have shown.
